We're heading back into Chapter Five - 'The Whomping Willow' for this week's recipe
"A large plate of sandwiches, two silver goblets, and a jug of iced pumpkin juice appeared with a pop"
Time to give McGonagall's never-ending plate of sandwiches a go!
Harry and Ron might have missed the Great Hall Feast but they have a never-ending plate of chicken and ham sandwiches to work through so for this week's recipe we're going to take on a 100 layer food challenge to create our biggest sandwich yet!
This 100 layer sandwich challenge is going to test our baking and our engineering skills. I'll show you how to make an easy white bread recipe for the sandwiches before stacking them as high as we can with a range of Hogwarts House inspired fillings!
If you'd like to know how to make homemade bread follow this simple step-by-step recipe to create your own chicken and ham sandwiches!
100 Layer Chicken & Ham Sandwich Ingredients
(makes 1 epic sandwich - for 10-20 servings)
For the easy white bread recipe
1.5kg strong white bread flour
3 packets (21g) dried yeast
1000ml lukewarm water
2 tbsp oil
2 tbsp butter (optional)
For the red onion chutney recipe
2 red onions
1 tbsp oil
pepper (to taste)
2 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
For the mustard mayo
5 tbsp mayonnaise
1/2 tbsp wholegrain mustard
For the remaining fillings
1 small lettuce
20-30 slices of chicken
20-30 slices of ham
BBQ skewers (for support)
100 Layer Sandwich Method:
To begin you want to prepare your easy homemade bread recipe by placing your flour into a bowl and making a well in the middle. Place the salt on one side, and the yeast on the other before adding the water and oil into the centre of the well.
Knead the dough on a stand mixer for 5 minutes or by hand for 10 minutes until it forms a soft, smooth dough ball.
Lightly grease a bowl, add your dough in and cover with cling film. Allow to rise for an hour until it has doubled in size.
Knock back the air by kneading the dough for 1 minute and then split into 3. Roll each third into an oblong and then place into a greased loaf tin. Cover again and leave to rise for another hour until doubled in size.
Bake the loaves at 180c (350f) for 30 minutes until golden brown. (Wizard Tip! 10 minutes before removing from the oven brush with melted butter for an added shine). Allow the bread to cool completely before removing from the tins and cutting into 1 cm slices.
For the red onion chutney, cut your onions in half and then slice into thin rings. Heat the oil in a pan and then add in the onions stirring for 5 minutes until they begin to go golden. Season with salt and pepper, add in the sugar and balsamic vinegar and then stir through for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce has thickened. Transfer to a bowl and allow to cool.
For the mustard mayo, add the mayonnaise and mustard in a bowl and mix thoroughly.
Wash your tomatoes and lettuce and then slice both so you have thin rounds of tomatoes, and shreds of lettuce.
Assemble! All that's left to do is begin stacking your 100 layer sandwich. Begin it bread, butter it and then alternate your fillings with additional slices of bread until you reach your goal!
It will be VERY un-sturdy at points, so take your time trying to level it out and give it support where necessary (Wizard Tip! Use BBQ skewers diagonally through the sandwich to hold it up and trim them down once you're finished and ready to present your sandwich)
And viola! I wasn't sure we were going to make it at points but I was so happy that it held at the end - and it was a pretty fun challenge so keep an eye out for more in the future!
