This week we're mixing up a magical start to your day!

We've finished with Chapter Three of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, so let's move on to Chapter Four - 'At Flourish and Blotts' to see what's next:

Time to start our day in the Wizarding World with a magical twist on the classic Porridge !

Porridge (or Oatmeal to my US readers) is a traditional breakfast recipe that is packed full of energy to keep you going for lunch. That's a pretty magical property to have - but we're going to take it one step further by adding in elements of Butterbeer

This magical Homemade Butterbeer Porridge recipe is going to transform the classic porridge into a pint of Wizarding World Butterbeer! I'll show you how to make butterscotch sauce from scratch and how to cook porridge perfectly before assembling it into your magical Butterbeer mug effect!

Homemade Butterbeer Porridge Recipe Ingredients

(makes 4 portions)

For the homemade butterscotch sauce recipe

  • 100g light brown sugar

  • 45ml water

  • 25g butter

  • 300ml double cream

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • pinch of salt

For the porridge recipe

  • 160g oats (40g per person)

  • 1000ml milk (250ml per person)

  • pinch of salt

  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg

  • 1 tsp vanilla

  • 1 tbsp sugar


  1. To begin, you want to prepare your homemade butterscotch sauce by placing your sugar and water in a pan. Bring to the boil and allow to caramalise until dark golden brown. (Wizard tip! Avoid stirring too much and swirl the pan to help the sugar dissolve)

  2. Whisk in the butter until melted and then slowly pour in the cream stirring until smooth. Be careful as the mixture may bubble and spit. Flavour with the vanilla and salt and then pour into a bowl and allow to cool.

  3. For the porridge pour your oats, milk, salt, nutmeg and vanilla into a pot and stir on a medium heat for 4-5 minutes. Carry on mixing to prevent it burning and it should thicken.

  4. Remove 2 large scoops of porridge (for your Butterbeer topping) and place into a bowl. Stir in the sugar to taste.

  5. Fill your mugs about 1cm from the top with the butterbeer porridge and then spoon the white porridge over the top.

  6. Finish with a dusting of nutmeg and serve hot!
