Hagrid's Rock Cake Recipe | My Harry Potter Kitchen (Recipe #49)

Hagrid's infamous Rock Cakes are here - hopefully these won't break your teeth though!


This homemade rock cakes recipe is great for baking beginners and will leave you with a rich, lightly spiced bun that is packed full of dried fruits! These are traditional served in rounds but as it's My Harry Potter Kitchen I thought we'd create this recipe lightning bolt style!

Hagrid's Rock Cakes Recipe Ingredients:

(makes 6 rock cakes)

  • 250g plain flour

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 2 tsp baking power

  • 75g butter

  • 75g golden caster sugar

  • 1/4 tsp mixed spice

  • 1 egg

  • 3 tbsp milk

  • 1/4 tsp vanilla

  • 100g dried mixed fruits

  • 50g glace cherries

Hagrid's Rock Cakes Method:

  1. To make the rock cakes dough add the flour, salt, baking powder and sugar into a bowl. Add in the butter and work with your fingers until it creates small breadcrumbs.

  2. Whisk together the egg, milk and vanilla in a jug. Make a well in the flour mixture before pouring the eggs in. Work with your hands until it forms a ball of dough. (Wizard Tip! This will be slightly firmer than the typical Rock Cake to help us shape them)

  3. Lightly flour your surface and flatten the rock cake mixture with your hands to about 2cm thick. Use a stencil to cut out your lightning bolt shapes before transferring to a lined baking tray. Bake in the oven at 180c for 20 minutes until golden.

When Hagrid's Rock Cakes look this good I'd say it's definitely worth the risk to tuck in!
