This week we're jumping forward to Chapter Twelve of the Philosopher's Stone - 'The Mirror of Erised' for our next recipe

"They sat by the hour eating anything they could spear on a toasting fork - bread, crumpets"

Crumpets are one of my all time favourite breakfast treats so I couldn't wait to conjure up a homemade version with a little extra magic!

This homemade crumpet recipe is so easy to master that you'll be able to perfect them even it's your first time! Once you've prepared your batter, I'll show you how to make your own moulds so you can fry your crumpets into any shape you like - of course I've gone for lightning bolts!

Homemade Crumpets Recipe Ingredients:

(makes 8 crumpets)

  • 200ml water

  • 200ml milk

  • 1 tsp caster sugar

  • 14g fast-action dried yeast

  • 300g strong white bread flour

  • ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

  • ½ tsp salt

  • oil for frying

Harry Potter Crumpets Recipe Method:

  1. To make your crumpet batter, begin by heating your water and milk together in a pan until warm. Add in the sugar and stir until dissolved. Allow to cool until it's lukewarm and then sprinkle over the yeast. Set aside for 5 minutes until frothy.

  2. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl - that's the flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt and stir together. Make a well in the middle and then pour the yeast mixture in. Work through into a smooth batter before covering with cling film and allowing to rise in a warm place for an hour.

  3. While the dough is rising you can make your DIY moulds by cutting strips of aluminium from empty drink cans. Then stick the strips together while bending into any shape you wish! (If you want to skip this step you can always by some heatproof moulds).

  4. Place a pan on a medium heat and add in your well greased moulds, brushing all sides and the base of the pan with oil.

  5. Stir the batter until smooth and add a few tablespoons into each mould so it's about 1 cm high. Fry for 5 minutes until bubbles come up to the surface. Use tongs and a knife to release the edges of the crumpets from the mould and then flip over and cook for another minute.

  6. Place to one side and repeat with the remaining crumpets. Once cooled you can store these crumpets for up to 3 days and pop into the toaster before serving

What would you top your magical crumpets with?
