This week, the Christmas feast at Hogwarts is wrapping up, but we've still got time for another Hogwarts themed treat!

This week we're heading back into Chapter 12 of the Chamber of Secrets "The Polyjuice Potion" for our next recipe:

"She held up two plump chocolate cakes. "I've filled these with a simple Sleeping Draft"

Watch out Crabbe and Goyle - we've got some irresistible chocolate cakes on the way!

The Polyjuice Plan is underway and to catch Crabbe and Goyle I'm creating my ultimate double chocolate cupcake recipe which is bound to knock them off their feet! Better yet, as the feast has just wrapped up I'm adding an extra element of Hogwarts Pride by turning these into Sorting Hat Cupcakes with hidden buttercream centres!

These magical treats can be edible Sorting Hat Cupcakes so are a perfect treat for guests at your next Harry Potter party!

If you've been looking for an easy chocolate cupcake recipe follow this simple step-by-step recipe to learn how to make homemade Sorting Hat Cupcakes!

Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cupcake Recipe Ingredients

(makes 8 large or 12 medium cupcakes)

For the chocolate cupcake recipe

  • 120g (4oz) golden caster sugar

  • 120g (4oz) butter

  • 2 eggs

  • 120g (4oz) self-raising flour

  • ½ tsp vanilla extract

  • ¼ tsp ground mixed spice

  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder

  • 2 tbsp boiling water

For the white chocolate buttercream recipe

  • 120g (4oz) butter

  • 240g (8oz) icing sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tbsp milk

  • 100g white chocolate

  • food colouring gel in red, green, blue and yellow

To decorate

  • Golden nuggets/sprinkles

Easy Hogwarts Cupcake Recipe Method:

  1. To begin you want to make your easy chocolate cupcake batter by creaming together your butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides and mix for another minute.

  2. Crack your eggs into a jug, whisk lightly and then slowly pour into your butter and sugar mixing until smooth.

  3. Add your flavour, vanilla and mixed spice into the bowl. Separately make a paste out of the cocoa powder and hot water and add into the mix once smooth. Beat the cake mix together until just combined.

  4. Line a cupcake tray with cupcake cases and then spoon in the cake batter until they are just over half full. (Wizard Tip! Gently tap the tray on your worktop to level them out). Bake the cupcakes in the oven at 180c (350F) for 10-15 minutes until a skewer comes out clean.

  5. While the cupcakes are cooling, prepare the white chocolate buttercream by melting the white chocolate in bowl over simmering water (or in the microwave). Set aside to cool.

  6. Whisk the butter until smooth and then add in ⅓ of the icing sugar. Mix until incorporated, whisk for 1-2 minutes and then add in another ⅓ icing sugar. Repeat until all the icing is incorporated.

  7. Flavour the buttercream with vanilla, milk and the cooled white chocolate. Continue whisking for another 1-2 minutes until it holds firm peaks.

  8. Take out ⅓ of your icing for the cupcake centres and split this into four bowls. Dye these with the food colouring gels into the Hogwarts House colours - red for Gryffindor, green for Slytherin, blue for Ravenclaw and yellow for Hufflepuff.

  9. Use a cupcake corer or spoon to carve out the middle of the cupcakes and then fill with 1-2 tsp of the coloured icing.

  10. Place the remaining white chocolate buttercream into a piping bag with a star nozzle and ice a swirl on top making sure you cover up the coloured icing in the middle. Finish the cupcakes with a sprinkle of the golden nuggets for an added magical effect.

And with that, our knockout Hogwarts House cupcakes are complete!
