We're heading back to the cabin for our next recipe in the Philosopher's Stone, Chapter Three - 'The Letters From No One'

"Uncle Vernon's rations turned out to be a packet of crisps each and for bananas"

Crisps are an incredible addictive snack that we often take for granted but they're actually quite easy to make! The most difficult bit is creating your own flavourings but with a little bit of science (and magic) I'll show you how to make crisp flavourings too!

This easy homemade crisp recipe is a great way to recreate one of the world's most popular snacks and personalise the flavourings for you and your guests. I'll show you how to make crisps as well as how to turn natural ingredients into homemade crisp flavourings.

Homemade Crisp Ingredients:

(makes approx 400g crisps - 4 flavours)

For the crisps

  • 600g low-sugar potatoes

  • oil for frying

For the root vegetable crisp recipe

  • 1 sweet potato

  • 2 beetroots

  • 1 parsnip

  • 1 carrot

For the homemade crisp flavourings

  • maltodextrin

  • salt

  • 50g chorizo

  • 1 red pepper

  • 1 lime

  • black pepper

  • 1 tbsp honey

  • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard

Homemade Crisp Recipe Method:

  1. To make your homemade crisps you want to begin by preparing your potatoes. (Wizard Tip! Find a variety of potatoes with low-sugar content to reduce the amount of caramelisation as they cook). Peel and wash them and then leave in a bowl of water to prevent them browning.

  2. Slice your potatoes as thinly as possible using either a food processor, grater or knife and then place in between paper towel to soak up any excess water. Repeat the process for your root vegetables.

  3. To create the homemade crisp flavourings maltodextrin helps absorb the flavour from ingredients but keep it as a powder which can be sprinkled over the crisps.

  4. For the Gryffindor chorizo and red pepper crisps, cut the chorizo and red peppers into chunks, roast in the oven at 180c (350F) for 20 minutes and then blend in a food processor. Place 4-5 tbsp of maltodextrin into a bowl and add in the puree a few drops at a time - whisking it as quickly as possible to prevent it clumping. Once the maltodextrin is still lightly coloured but still powdered press through a sieve to remove any clumps. Season the powder with salt.

  5. For the Slytherin black pepper and lime crisps, squeeze the juice of the limes and add into 4-5 tbsp of maltodextrin slowly while whisking. Press the powder through a sieve and season with salt and pepper.

  6. For the Hufflepuff honey mustard crisps, mix the honey and mustard together in a bowl and the add drops into 4-5 tbsp of maltodextrin. Whisk through to flavour the powder and then press through a sieve. Season the powder with salt.

  7. Pour the oil into a pan and heat on high to around 180c (350F). (Wizard Tip! Place a tester slice of potato in to check it is ready, it should bubble straight away and go brown in 1-2 minutes).

  8. Fry your potatoes in batches for 2-3 minutes ensuring they have enough space to cook and turning occasionally. Once cooked remove from the pan and drain on some paper towel.

  9. For the Ravenclaw root vegetable chips, fry these in a separate batch for about 3-4 minutes.

  10. Separate the white potatoes into three bowls, and while they're still hot and slightly oiled, sprinkle over the maltodextrin and toss together - you should be able to smell the flavours! Season the root vegetable chips with salt.

  11. Store the crisps in an air-tight container (if you can resist eating them straight away)
