This week we're moving on to Chapter Six of the Philosopher's Stone - 'The Journey from Platform Nine and Three-Quarters' for our next recipe
"Ron's ears went pink again and he muttered that he'd brought sandwiches"
We've made it on to the train to Hogwarts - and that means we need snacks for the journey! Don't tell the trolley witch but Ron has brought his own sandwiches on board, so it's time to create some with a filling inspired by our favourite red-head.
This sandwich recipe is the perfect lunch idea for harry Potter fans. Complete with a same day sourdough bread recipe, you can personalise the fillings to create your favourite meal. As it's for Ron this time I thought we'd include a Red Leicester cheese feeling as a nod to his vibrant orange hair!
Ron's Sandwich Recipe Ingredients:
(makes 6-8 servings)
For the same day sourdough bread starter
200g strong white bread flour
1/2 tbsp fast action dried yeast
For the same day sourdough bread recipe
450g strong white bread flour
1/2 tbsp yeast
1 tbsp salt
For Ron's Sandwich fillings
300g Red Leicester cheese
handful of spinach
Ron's Sandwich Recipe Method:
To make the same day sourdough starter recipe, add the flour and yeast into a bowl and stir together. Make a well in the middle and then pour the water in whisking through into a smooth paste.
Cover the starter with cling film and leave in a warm area to mature for a few hours (Wizard Tip! The longer you leave it, the stronger sourdough flavour you'll get so it's best to make in the morning and bake the bread at night)
To make the sourdough bread recipe place the dry ingredients into a bowl - the flour, yeast and salt. Stir until combined, create a well in the middle and then add in the sourdough starter and water. Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes until it forms a soft dough that is springy to the touch.
Transfer the dough into a greased bowl, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place until doubled in size - it should take around an hour.
Once risen, knock the area back slightly by kneading on a lightly floured surface before shaping into a round. (Wizard Tip! To get a smooth finish, tuck the outside of the dough underneath repeatedly, creating surface tension as you go). Place onto a baking tray, cover with cling film and leave to double in size again.
You can score the top of the bread to help steam escape and then bake the sourdough bread in the oven at 180c (350F) for about 35-40 minutes. (Wizard Tip! You'll know it's ready when the bread makes a hollow sound when you tap the bottom)
Allow the bread to cool completely before slicing with a serrated knife. You can then prepare your sandwich fillings of choice - I've washed the spinach, sliced the tomatoes and pickles, and thickly sliced the Red Leicester cheese.
Assemble the sandwiches by buttering the bread, stacking the fillings and sandwiching another slice of bread on top.
